End of Season report

As it was the last weekend for this season’s bowling, Sue Bates’ suggestion that we have a fish and chip supper on Saturday was well received.  The sun shone before we had a cuppa on Saturday, and some hardy souls did continue playing outside for a time, while others played cards and board games until supper arrived – and very nice it was too.  On Sunday the weather was better than it had been for most of the summer, perfect for our last afternoon’s bowling until next April.

This was my first season as Ladies Captain and I feel that it has flown by.  I have found the experience to be a steep learning curve but also most enjoyable.  I could not have done it without all the help from, in particular, Kath, who has advised and reminded me along the way, and I have appreciated all the help from all the other ladies, not only with their excellent bowling (we won all our ‘home’ games) but for their marvellous catering skills when we have provided teas for visitors.  Maureen also deserves a special mention for her expertise at selling and organising raffles.  A very good team effort from everyone.  Roll on next season!

Spital Bowling v Little Aston Ladies at Home on Wednesday 21st May 2008.

The Little Aston Ladies team arrived with only 9 players, due to 8 regular members being on holiday.   This meant that while we had 15 ladies ready and willing we were only able to play 8 games, because nearly all the Little Aston team had to play twice.   They are all very good players and tested us well, but the outcome was a very satisfying win to Spital - 111 to 82 points. We were very pleased to have the support of Alan, Barry, Cliff, David, Eric, Howard, and Tony, who came along to mark and measure for us.   A good afternoon enjoyed by us all.

Start of 2008 Season & Open Day

The green opened on 12th April.  We had 12 ladies, 6 gents and 2 spectators turn up.  The weather was not what you could call ideal for bowling.  In the space of 2 to 3 hours it started cloudy then it rained followed by hail and eventually the sun put in a welcome appearance!

The following week end, Saturday and Sunday were open days.  The weather on the Saturday was dull and cold, Sunday was just as dull and if anything a degree or two colder - in the event we attracted 1 visitor.

Our first game was at Little Aston, a Gents Doubles match.  The weather by this time (23rd April) was starting to improve and we had a good afternoon's bowling, sad to say we lost the match 156 - 114 but we look forward to the rematch on 14th May at Spital.

We met Little Aston on 7th May in a Mixed Doubles match at Little Aston and once again they were the victors.  The weather for this match could not have been more perfect. We had wall to wall sunshine with temperatures in the low 20's.  A very pleasant afternoon's
bowling was had by all who took part.  Little Aston notched up another win 164 - 121, again we look forward to the rematch at Spital and hope for better fortune.

First Ladies match of the Season

Fifteen ladies from Spital Bowling went along to play Lichfield Museum Ladies, the first competition of the season.  These ladies are all very competitive and many of them play in leagues, so we were very pleased with the final score of 108-97, meaning they won by a mere 11 points.  All the Spital ladies played very well, with everyone trying their best.  A special mention must go to Kath and Maureen who won their game 15-0.  It was also the first time that Brenda, Helen and Mim had played at Lichfield and they all acquitted themselves well.

The Museum Ladies gave us a warm welcome and made our first competition an enjoyable event.  The rain stayed away until the very end of the afternoon, when Kath and Sue were playing the final game against Club Captain Flo and Jean, and they and the spectators got quite a good soaking.  However, the lovely tea of a variety of cakes and pastries and numerous cups of tea soon made up for that!
